How to Apply Blush Based on Your Face Shape

Blush can highlight your cheekbones and give you a glowing complexion. Not everyone should apply blush in the same way. The way you apply your blush will depend on the type of face shape you have. Applying blush in the right way can help you change the shape of your face. Depending on where you use blush, you can make your face look longer, shorter, or softer. Here are some tips to guide you.

Round Face

If you have full cheeks and a curved jaw line, you have a round face. When you put on blush, smile and quickly wipe a cream stick blush on the apples of your cheeks. Then use a foundation brush to work toward your temples and earlobes using medium strokes. This method will highlight your bone structure.

Oval Face

If your face is long with a narrow forehead and chin and prominent cheekbones, you have an oval face. Put blush on a synthetic brush, get rid of the excess, and gently blend the blush from the most prominent parts of your cheekbones downward and up toward your temples. Use a tiny bit above your temples. This will highlight your cheekbones and eyes.

Heart-Shaped Face

Someone with a heart-shaped face has prominent cheekbones, a narrower chin, and a longer face. If you have a heart-shaped face, you should put some blush on your brush, shake off the extra, and apply it from the top of your temples to your cheekbones in a C-shaped pattern. Use some more blush along your cheekbones and then diffuse it up and in toward your temples. Make sure the blush is well blended. This will give you a glowing look that will accentuate your eyes and your high cheekbones.

Square Face

If your face has straight sides and a flat jaw line, you have a square face. You want to use blush to make the angular look softer. You will need to cover your cheekbones all the way from the edges of your nose to your hair line. Use cream blush and a synthetic brush. Sweep the blush across your cheekbones, starting at the bottom and working your way up with long and light strokes. Gently blend the blush downward.

Oblong Face

If your forehead, cheeks, and jaw are all around the same width, you have an oblong face, or a soft rectangle. Start out by applying blush at the apples of your cheeks. Blend it toward your nose and then toward your temples. Blend the blush downward to avoid highlighting your cheekbones. Apply a little more blush on your forehead and to the sides of your eyebrows. Applying blush this way will flatter your entire face.
