How Often to Wash Your Hair Based on Your Hair Type

hair type

You want your hair to be clean and healthy, but washing every day can rob it of its natural oils. Not washing enough, on the other hand, can make some hair types feel greasy and look dirty. You may have heard a lot of conflicting advice about how often you should wash your hair. The right solution for you will depend on your hair type and any treatments you have had done to your hair. Here are some tips to guide you.

Washing Recommendations for Your Hair Type

If you have fine hair, it may struggle to hold volume. Fine hair can look oily and weighed down fairly quickly after being washed. However, washing fine hair daily is not a good idea because it can lose movement. For fine hair, it is best to shampoo three times a week. Look for a light volumizing conditioner to avoid weighing down your hair. Only apply it from the mid-shaft to the ends of your hair.

If your hair is thick and straight, you can go a few days between shampoos. You should not wash thick hair more often than every other day. You can make your thick hair more manageable by using a smoothing shampoo that contains keratin or argan oil to make your hair shiny.

With curly hair, oil from your scalp will not travel down the shaft as fast as it would with straight hair. Curly hair can be washed twice a week. Use a moisturizing shampoo or a cleansing conditioner to remove dirt and oil without drying out your hair. Avoid shampoos with sodium lauryl sulfate because it can damage your hair.

How Often to Wash Chemically Treated Hair

If you have color-treated hair, you need to remove dirt and product buildup, but not the color. Dye makes hair more porous, and shampooing too often can remove color molecules from the hair follicles. Wash your hair twice a week with a shampoo that is designed to protect color-treated hair.

Hair that has been treated with keratin needs to be washed with a keratin-safe shampoo that does not contain sulfates to avoid washing the protein out of the hair. You can wash keratin-treated hair every other day to keep the protein in your hair and make it shiny.

If you have had your hair chemically straightened or relaxed, it is more fragile and needs to be treated with extra care. Wash your hair once a week with a gentle shampoo that contains nourishing ingredients such as biotin, soy, or eucalyptus oil and does not contain harsh ingredients such as parabens and sulfates.
