How to Keep Your Hair Color from Fading

hair coloring ctIf you have ever dyed your hair, you have probably found that your color faded over time. The number of washes that your hair color will last will depend on the type of dye you choose, how often you wash your hair, and the products you use.

In general, temporary hair color lasts for one to two washes, semi-permanent color that doesn’t contain peroxide lasts up to 12 washes, and demi-permanent color with low levels of peroxide lasts up to 20 washes. Permanent hair color won’t wash out, but it can fade over time. While some fading is inevitable with any hair color, there are steps you can take both before and after you get your hair dyed to make your color last longer.

Healthy hair holds color longer than damaged hair. Take care of your hair before you get it dyed to prevent damage and drying. Use a deep conditioning treatment a week before your coloring appointment. Pay particular attention to your ends.

A clear glaze can make your color last longer. You can get a glaze immediately after you have your hair dyed or use an at-home glaze in between colorings to freshen it up.

Washing your hair can cause it to lose some of its color. Give your color time to set in and avoid washing your hair for as long as possible after you get it dyed.

A harsh shampoo with sulfates can strip hair of its color. Look for a shampoo and conditioner that are gentle, color-safe, and sulfate-free. You can cut down on how often you need to wash your hair by using a dry shampoo. Use a clarifying shampoo occasionally to remove product buildup. Color-depositing shampoos and conditioners can prevent hair color from fading.

Products that contain alcohol can cause hair color to fade. Avoid alcohol-based styling products, especially if you are going to be out in the sun.

Dyeing hair strips away the protective cuticles that surround the strands. This makes hair more susceptible to heat damage from blow-drying, straightening, and curling. Heat-damaged hair can become dry, which can make your color look flat. If you must use heat styling products, apply a heat protection spray to your hair first. This will also give your hair extra shine.

Chlorine in a swimming pool and the sun’s UV rays can cause hair color to fade. Protect your hair with a swimming cap or a strengthening conditioner if you go in the water or with a hat or UV protection spray if you are going to be out in the sun.
