How to Keep Your Hair Tangle-Free

anniversary hair and makeupIf you have long hair, you probably struggle with tangles that make it hard to brush and style and hurt when you try to get rid of them. Pulling on tangles can cause damage to your hair and can even pull it out. Here are some strategies you can use to prevent tangles and have hair that is healthy and manageable.

Washing and Drying Your Hair

Hair tends to tangle more often after it is washed. You can avoid a lot of tangles by brushing your hair before you shampoo it.

Washing your hair every day can strip it of its natural oils and leave it dry and damaged. Washing it every other day will leave more of the oils and sebum that keep hair healthy. This can go a long way toward preventing tangles.

After you shampoo your hair, use a nourishing conditioner that contains silicone. It will protect your hair from humidity, prevent frizziness that could contribute to tangles, and make your hair shiny. Use a wide-toothed comb to gently remove any tangles before you rinse the conditioner out of your hair.

Use a deep conditioner once a week to moisturize your hair. Work the conditioner into your hair and then wrap it in a shower cap for 30 to 60 minutes before rinsing it.

Be careful when you dry your hair. Gently squeeze it with a towel instead of wrapping, twisting, or rubbing it. Avoid using a blow dryer or flat iron because they can dry out your hair.

Brushing and Combing Your Hair

When your hair is damp, spray it with a detangling spray or serum to make it easier to brush. You can also use a detangling brush if your hair tends to get a lot of tangles.

You should not pull on tangles when you brush your hair. Start brushing below the tangle and it will come out much more easily than it would if you pulled on it from the top.

Other Hair Care Tips

When hair grows, the ends can get dry and split, which can lead to tangles. Split ends can also make hair look dull and feel rough. You can avoid split ends by trimming your hair every six to eight weeks.

Dyeing hair frequently can make it dry and damaged. This can lead to tangles. Avoid dyeing your hair too often to keep it healthy and tangle-free.

If you have long hair, it can get tangled when you sleep on it. You can prevent tangles by draping your hair over your pillow or putting it in a bun while you sleep. Hair can get caught on a cotton pillowcase and get tangled. Look for a pillowcase made from a smooth material, such as silk.

If you are going to exercise, put your hair in a ponytail, bun, or braid. This will prevent it from getting matted with sweat and dirt and make it easier to brush later.

On a windy day, pull your hair back or cover it with a hat or scarf to prevent tangles.
