How to Make Your Oily Hair More Manageable by The Beauty Bar

woman with flowing hairOily hair can look and feel greasy and dirty. It can make you feel self-conscious and can affect your self-esteem. Here are some tips to help you deal with oily hair and get your hair and scalp under control.

What Causes Oily Hair

The first step is to figure out why your hair and scalp are oily. It could be that hormones are causing your scalp to produce excessive amounts of sebum, or natural oils. It could also be caused by using the wrong products, or it could simply be that that is how your hair is.

Oily hair can lead to a vicious cycle. Many people with oily hair wash it more often to get rid of oil, but that just causes the problem to get worse because the scalp responds by producing more sebum. The simplest and best way to break the cycle is to wash your hair less often. Skip washing on a day when you will be home and it doesn’t matter how your hair looks. Gradually work your way up to going two or three days between shampoos.

You may be avoiding conditioner and moisturizing shampoo because you don’t want to add extra moisture to already greasy hair. However, your hair still needs moisture to regulate the production of sebum. Use a lightweight moisturizing shampoo and conditioner to replenish moisture in your hair and balance out your sebum production. You can use a lightweight conditioner or a leave-in spray conditioner on the ends. You can also try conditioning your hair first and then shampooing to remove residue.

Tips to Help You Manage Your Oily Hair

  • Avoid touching your hair as much as possible. Touching and styling your hair can cause it to produce more oil.
  • Use a clarifying shampoo twice a month. This will remove any product buildup that is left on your hair.
  • Make sure you rinse your hair completely when you shampoo and condition it. The greasy feeling you have could be caused by leftover shampoo or conditioner. Rinse for at least 30 seconds.
  • Use cool water to rinse your hair. Hot water stimulates the scalp to produce sebum. Cool water prevents sebum production, closes the cuticle, and reduces damage to the hair.
  • Dry shampoo can help absorb oil during the day if you cannot wash your hair. It will absorb oil and odors and help give your hair volume.
  • You can use a powder to absorb oil on your scalp. You can use baby powder or cornstarch with light-colored hair and cocoa powder with dark hair.
  • Avoid products that are intended to make hair shiny. They usually contain oil. Look for volumizing products that contain less oil.
  • Hot air from a blow-dryer can stimulate sebum production. Let your hair air-dry or use a low heat setting.
  • You can experiment with different hairstyles. Straight hair tends to look greasier than curly or wavy hair.
