How to Choose the Right Products for Your Hair Type and Style

anniversary hair and makeupYou choose your haircut carefully, and you work hard to get the look you want before you go out in the morning. Unfortunately, your hair can quickly lose its style if you don’t use the right products. Here are some tips on which products to use with your particular hairstyle and hair type.

Products to Use with Curly Hair

You can use mousse to either define your curls or to straighten curly hair. Mousse can be used with any hair type. If your hair is short, use a puff the size of a tennis ball. Use more for longer hair. You can create soft waves by combing mousse through wet hair and then using a diffuser or letting your hair air-dry. If you want to straighten your hair, work mousse through the strands when your hair is dry from the roots to the tips. Then use a big, round brush with high heat to straighten your hair.

If you have curly hair, spray gel can lock in your curls and control frizz. It will distribute evenly and will not make your hair crunchy. Use enough to cover your curls from the roots to the tips. Spray it on wet hair and let it air-dry or dry it with a diffuser.

If you want to weigh down your curls and straighten your hair, use a straightening balm or serum. Use an amount the size of a ping pong ball or more if your hair is thick. Start an inch from the roots and smooth it onto your hair.

Products to Use with Thick or Coarse Hair

Hair lotion provides more hold than mousse but is less stiff than gel. Use it if you have thick and straight or coarse and curly hair. Use an amount the size of a golf ball or softball, depending on the length of your hair. Warm it in your palms and work it in your wet hair from the roots to the ends.

Products to Use with Fine Hair

Volumizer can lift your hair at the roots. Use it if you have fine, straight, and limp hair or if you have curly hair that falls flat. Spray volumizer on your hair when it is wet or dry close to the scalp and lift your hair using a hair dryer and a big, round brush.

Texturizer, or salt spray, can add texture and volume. Use it if you have fine or slightly wavy hair. Hold the container 6 to 10 inches from your scalp, use a few quick sprays, lift your hair in sections, and blow-dry or scrunch your hair.

Products to Add Texture

Wax can create texture with a choppy haircut like a shag or pixie. Use a thin layer of wax to lightly coat your fingertips and only apply it to the ends. Using it on other parts of your hair can make it greasy, limp, and dull.

Pomade can add texture like a wax and can also add shine. Use it if you have short or long layers. Use a drop the size of a dime to avoid weighing down your hair. If you have long hair, apply it to the ends. For short hair, apply it from the back to the front.

Other Products to Improve Your Hairstyle

Shine drops can seal the cuticles and make hair shiny. Use them if your hair looks dull. Apply a pea-sized drop to your hair when it is wet or dry or use three or four pumps to control frizziness. Rub it between your hands and then onto your hair from mid-shaft to the ends.

Hairspray can hold a style with all hair types. Hold the container 10 inches from your scalp and spray it liberally since it contains alcohol and will evaporate quickly.
