How to Make Your Hair Color Last Longer

anniversary hair and makeupIf you have decided to change your hair color, you will want your new look to last as long as possible. Here are some at-home hair care tips to make your color last longer between touchups.

It is important to use products formulated for color-treated hair. Use a shampoo and conditioner that contain color-protecting ingredients specifically designed for your hair color. Avoid styling products that list alcohol as one of the first five ingredients because they can dry out your hair.

Shampooing too often can cause your color to fade. Wash your hair every other day, or even less frequently if possible. You can use dry shampoo between washes to remove dirt and oil from your roots.

Chemicals used in hair dye make strands porous and can cause them to dry out. Combat dryness by using a deep conditioner once a week after you shampoo your hair. For thick hair, start just below the roots and smooth it down to the ends. If your hair is fine, start at ear level. Leave it in for 10 minutes and then rinse. Put on a shower cap after conditioning your hair to boost its effectiveness.

You can extend the life of your color by using an at-home glaze between touchups. Apply a gloss every two weeks to boost shine and brightness.

Water from your daily shower can cause your color to fade. To reduce its effects, don’t stand directly under the showerhead except when you are rinsing your hair. Use warm, not hot, water. Use a water filter to reduce the amount of minerals such as iron and lime that can make your color fade.

Ultraviolet rays from the sun can penetrate hair cuticles and cause oxidation or bleaching. You can combat this by spraying a protective hair sunscreen on your damp hair before going out in the sun. Pay special attention to your crown, which gets the most sun.

Mineral deposits in pool water can cause color-treated hair to take on a green-orange tinge. To prevent this, rub a drop or two of baby oil over your dry hair before swimming, then immediately rinse with tap water. If you do find that your hair is looking greenish after going in the pool, rinse it with V8 juice to neutralize the green.
