How to Wash and Condition Your Hair

anniversary hair and makeupWashing and conditioning your hair is probably something you do several times a week, but you may not be using the right products or washing your hair in the right way. To get the best results, you need to choose the right shampoo and conditioner and know the right way to use them. Here are some tips on how to wash and condition your hair.

Choose the Right Products and Schedule for Your Hair Type

Choose a shampoo and conditioner that are made for your hair type. Use moisturizing products for dry hair and color-safe formulas if you dye your hair. Use volumizing products if you have fine hair that would be too weighed down by other types of shampoos and conditioners.

How often you should wash your hair depends on the type of hair you have. Oily or fine hair may need to be washed daily, but normal or dry hair can be washed a few times a week.

How to Shampoo Your Hair

You should always wet your hair with hot or warm water before you use any shampoo or conditioner. Hot or warm water will open the cuticle, which can help remove dirt and product buildup. It will also loosen the oils on your scalp and open the cuticle so it can absorb oil.

A quarter-sized amount of shampoo should be enough, unless your hair is very long or thick. When you wash your hair, you should focus most of your attention on your roots because the hair at the scalp is the youngest and oiliest. The hair at the ends is older and drier, which makes it more fragile.

Wash your hair gently to avoid damaging the cuticle, which can cause hair to become frizzy or break. Start lathering with vertical strokes and moderate pressure at the roots to stimulate blood flow to the scalp and hair growth. Avoid using circular motions because that can cause tangles. Then spread the lather to the ends with straight motions, but do not scrub the ends.

You usually shouldn’t wash your hair a second time because that can strip the hair of its natural oils. You only need to wash a second time if your hair is extremely dry and the shampoo does not produce a lather the first time.

How to Use Conditioner

After you have rinsed the shampoo out of your hair, squeeze out some of the water. Then apply conditioner from the mid-length to the ends of your hair. Don’t put conditioner on your roots because that will make your hair oily. Leave the conditioner on until the end of your shower to allow the hair to absorb it.

Rinse the conditioner out of your hair with cold water. That will seal the cuticle, which will make your hair shiny because it will reflect more light.

If you have long hair, use a little conditioner before you shampoo. Apply a small amount of conditioner to your ends and rinse it out. This will prevent the ends from drying out and will also add moisture to fill in holes in the cuticle, which will make your hair smoother and shinier.

You might want to consider using a shower filter to remove rust and minerals from the water. This can protect your color and can also make your hair softer.
