5 Ways to Braid Your Hair

Braids are classic and perfect for nearly any occasion. There are many ways to braid your hair, from the traditional French braid to a contemporary fish tail. Here are some step-by-step instructions on how to get the perfect braided look.

Braided Bun

A braided bun is ideal for hot summer days and can add a touch of glamour to your look. Pull your hair into a low, tight ponytail and braid it tightly. Tie the ends with a clear elastic and twist the braid into an oval bun at the nape of your neck. Tuck the ends underneath the bun and secure it with hairpins. Spritz with hair spray.

Fish Tail Braid

A fish tail braid works best with long or medium length wet hair. To create the look, pull your hair into a low ponytail and split it into two sections. Pull a small strand of hair from the bottom of one section around to the top of the other. Repeat with a strand from the other handful of hair in the opposite direction. Continue alternating from side to side until there is no hair left in either hand. Secure with a hair tie and spritz with hair spray.

French Braid

For a classic French braid, take a section of hair from the crown of your head and separate it into three equal sections. Cross the right strand to the center and then the left strand to the center to create a classic braid. Incorporate a little more hair from each side every time you cross over the center. After you reach the nape of your neck, finish by making a classic three-strand braid. Tie the ends with a hair tie and loosen sections for subtle texture.

Four-Strand Braid

A four-strand braid looks intricate and elegant. Gather your hair into a low ponytail and split it into four sections. Starting from the right-hand side, number the sections 1-4. Weave section 1 over section 2, under section 3, and over section 4. Renumber the strands 1-4, starting on the right, and repeat the steps (over, under, over). Pull the hair tight after each sequence. Repeat to form a rope-like braid, secure with a hair tie, and spray with hair spray.

Mini Braids

Mini braids work best when hair is not freshly washed. Pull a small strand of hair from the side of your temple and braid it tight to your scalp. Gradually work the ends into a fish tail toward the crown of your head and secure it with a hair pin. Repeat on the other side of your head. Remove the pins and braid the two braids with the rest of your hair. Tie with a hair tie and use a large barrel wand to irregularly tong your hair into large sections. Leave some ends straight.
