Apply Skin Care Products in the Right Order for the Best Results

If your skin care routine involves several products, the order in which you apply them can have an effect on how well they work. Putting products on your skin in the proper order can help you achieve the best results.

You want each product you apply to be able to penetrate your skin. Heavier products can travel through lighter-weight products, but lighter-weight products cannot penetrate through heavy products. You should therefore apply the lightest products first and proceed in order to the heaviest products.

Start with any product that is water- or alcohol-based, since it is the easiest to penetrate the skin. Next, apply a gel, then a light lotion, followed by a heavier cream, a thick serum, and finally anything ointment-based.

If you are not sure how heavy a product is, look at the list of ingredients. A product that has oils, lanolins, or petrolatums near the top of the list is heavy. These products should come at the end of your series of skin products.

If a product sets and does not leave any residue, that means it has penetrated the skin. However, if it pools on the skin and is not absorbed, that means it has not penetrated the skin and should be applied later in your beauty routine.

You should apply sunscreen before any other product. It will need 20 to 30 minutes to be absorbed into your skin. The molecules must also align and orientate themselves parallel to each other to protect you from the sun’s UV rays. Applying a cream first can interfere with this process by creating bumps or ridges on the skin’s surface. A cream can also affect the sunscreen’s ability to protect you from the sun. You can also choose instead to simply apply a moisturizer that contains sunscreen.

Acne products are only effective if they are applied directly on the target area. You should apply acne products before anything else, even sunscreen. Then apply other products on top.

Now, some major department stores are stationing guides in the men cosmetic sections to help hesitant shoppers find the skin care products they need. As many retailers are noticing, as long as it has a masculine appeal men have no problem buying cosmetic products. Looking and feeling good isn’t the sole domain of women, and as sales are showing men are just as interested in healthy looking skin as their girlfriends are.
